Captain Falcon steps to the bar. He's dressed in an outfit -- saturated with color and complete with showing nipples -- that could only be described as "Nintendo cool." Cheesy, but likeable and even catchy music plays in the background. The bar itself is filled with patrons, a host of different alien scum, all in awe of the pilot. A crazy old man approaches and then begs and pleads that Falcon race for him. A few minutes later, the pilot soars around a twisting, floating track at dizzying speeds, and now it's players that find themselves in awe.
This is, of course, F-Zero GX, a futuristic racer from developer Amusement Vision and the good folks at Nintendo. Seasoned Nintendo groupies will recognize the name; the F-Zero franchise has been around for a long time, and for just as long the series has remained regarded as one of the best in the racing genre. GX doesn't break tradition: this is, simply, one of the best racers in years. The game doesn't forget its roots -- it feels very similar to the classic F-Zero titles on Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64. But at the same time GX delivers a far deeper and even more challenging experience. The end result is a title that rocks us, sometimes defeats us, but always dares us to keep playing. For some, GX will be the ultimate racer. For others, it will be flat out too difficult. The question is, which category do you fall in?
